Sijo is among the poetry with a fixed form made by the Korean people in old times. It is literature and music as the lyrics of a song.
Sijo is the form which was created by the emerging gentry in the late Goryeo Dynasty, because they thought that they couldn’t express the Confucian idea and the subjective emotions by only the established form at the turn of history.
Sijo includes the subject of fidelity, love, parting, longing, nature, etc, and it has been recited and passed down by many people for a long time.
This book includes a hundred famous poems selected carefully and translated into English.
It is difficult to express Korean into English, but I translated Sijo into easy English to the fullest so that foreigners could understand it well, and I tried to convey the feelings which Sijo has by moving the lines and the figure of language as they are.
Anyway, I hope that the readers all over the world understand and appreciate Sijo, the Korean traditional poems, through this book.
