Nana tells the story of Nana Coupeau's growth from a homeless man to a high-class prostitute during the last three years of the French Second Empire. Nana first appeared near the end of L'Assommoir (1877), Zola's early novel Rougon-Macquart series. Here she is the daughter of an abusive drunken man. At the end of the novel, she lives on the street and is just starting a life of prostitution.
