The first six chapters of the novel were serialized in Mary's Museum magazine between July and August 1869. Alcott added 13 chapters to the novel before publishing it. Summary
Her cheerful 14-year-old country girl Polly Milton visits her friend Fanny Shaw and her affluent family in her town for the first time. Poor Polly dislikes the Shaws for the most part, overwhelmed by their glamor and their urbanized, fashionable lifestyle, expensive clothes and other habits she has never been exposed to. Fanny's friends look down on her for her different behavior and simple dress, Fanny's brother Tom makes fun of her, and Fan himself sometimes finds her odd, but Polly's warmth, support and kindness eventually end up in all family members. Captivate her old-fashioned way and teach her a lesson she'll never forget.
