Little Women is an 1868 coming-of-age novel by American novelist Louisa May Alcott (1832-1888).
Alcott wrote the book, originally published in two volumes in 1868 and 1869, at the request of the publisher. The story follows the lives of March's four sisters (Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy), recounting their journey from childhood to womanhood. Loosely based on the life of the author and her three sisters, the book is also an autobiographical or semi-autobiographical novel by the author.

Summary
Four sisters and their mother, whom they call Marmee, live in noble poverty in a new neighborhood in Massachusetts. His father, who lost his entire fortune, serves as a Confederate chaplain far from his home during the American Civil War. A mother and daughter celebrate their first Christmas without a father. When Marmee asks her daughters to share Christmas breakfast with poor families, the girls and their mother venture into town with baskets to feed the hungry children...
