1권은 좋은 집안에서 태어났지만 거의 무일푼에 가까운 30대 중반의 19세기 여성을 그리고 있다. 그녀는 상류층을 섬기며 돈을 벌려고 애쓰지만 돈을 버는 데 실패한다. 그녀는 Emily의 친절한 마음과 좋은 본성에도 불구하고 자신의 권리를 대우하지 않는 이기적인 Lady Maria Bayne을 위해 일을 하게 된다
2권은 실제 생활이 동화 속 이야기와 다르다는 것을 보여준다. 그녀의 남편은 Emily Fox-Seaton을 자녀와 함께 떠나 인도로 여행을 떠난다. 전 상속인 알렉 오스본이 장자권이라고 믿는 것을 되찾기 위해 시도하면서 상황은 이상 전개된다.

Volume 1 depicts a 19th-century woman in her mid-30s who was born into a good family but is almost penniless. She tries to earn money by serving the upper class, but fails to earn her money. She ends up doing things for the selfish Lady Maria Bayne, who refuses to treat her in her own right, despite her Emily's kind heart and her good nature.
Volume 2 shows that real life is different from fairy tale stories. Her husband travels to India, leaving Emily Fox-Seaton with her children. Things take a turn for the worse as former heir Alec Osborn attempts to reclaim what he believes to be his birthright.
