Summary
Sarah is a special girl. She speaks Hindustani, French, and English, has read almost all of her books in her father's library, and uses her fantasy to imagine herself as a princess. Her father, a captain in the army, sends her to a boarding school in London, where Sarah makes friends with her and wins the heart of her headmistress, Miss Minchin, with her intelligence (and her fortune). But when news arrives of Sarah's father's death and the loss of her fortune, Miss Minchin makes Sarah her servant and banishes her to her rat-infested attic.
