Candide: or, All for the Best(1759)라는 제목의 영어 버전으로 널리 번역되었다. Candide: 또는 The Optimist (1762); 및 Candide: Optimism (1947).
〈Classics to read in English _ Candide by Voltaire〉
This book was first published in 1759 as a French satire written by the philosopher Voltaire of the Age of Enlightenment. The novel was widely translated into an English version entitled Candide: or, All for the Best (1759). Candide: or The Optimist (1762); and Candide: Optimism (1947). The story begins with Candide, a young man living a sheltered life in the paradise of the Garden of Eden and brainwashed with Leibniz's optimism by his mentor Professor Pangloss. The work depicts Candide's slow and painful disillusionment as she witnesses and experiences great hardships in the world following the sudden cessation of this lifestyle.
Fast, funny, and often absurd, the immortal story of the French philosopher takes Candide around the world and discovers that contrary to the teachings of his illustrious teacher, Dr. Pangloss, not everything is always for the best. Vivid with wit, whimsy and graceful storytelling, Candide is Voltaire's most famous work, a novella that comments on, critiques, and ridicules many contemporary events, thinkers, and philosophies.
