After being imprisoned in the Bastille for satirical writings and exiled to England for three years (1726?9), Voltaire wrote a series of letters giving the French public a panoramic view of English culture. Unlike the tyrannical feudal society of his homeland, he was full of passion and freedom. Letters on England praised England's religious sects, politics, scientists, and writers, but the clever Voltaire also praised French readers for his old-fashioned costumes, Quaker speeches, and humorous references to House pranks. Although initially banned in France, this intriguing and often comical account of a culture seen through a foreign eye had a profound effect on shaping French attitudes toward Britain.
