Together with his story "Plato's Dream", it is an early example of a literary genre called science fiction and has had an impact in the development of literary history. There is some uncertainty surrounding the first publication of Microm?gas, possibly in 1751 or as early as 1739, but the widely accepted publication is in 1752.
The story begins with a visit to Earth by a being from a planet orbiting the star Sirius and his companion from the planet Saturn.

It is the story of Microm?gas, a planetary dweller orbiting the star Sirius. His name literally means "small and big". Microm?gas is 120,000 royal feet (38.9 km) tall and has a waistline of 50,000 royal feet (16.24 km). The home world of the Sirians is calculated to be 21.6 million times larger in circumference than Earth, using mathematical proportions in the passage to relativize human homelands to the cosmic scale. When he is nearly 450 years old, nearing the end of what the inhabitants of a planet orbiting Sirius consider their childhood, Microm?gas writes a scientific book examining insects on his planet.
