Summary
In 1762, Jean Callas, a Protestant of Toulouse, commits suicide after being framed for killing his son, and is tortured to death on his wheel. His widow and children are tortured to force a confession in the absence of any evidence. Voltaire worked tirelessly for years to incite a horrific crime and collect money for the victims. His pamphlets aroused considerable sympathy and protest in England and throughout the continent. His efforts resulted in the writing of more than 100 plays, poems, and pamphlets about the event. Voltaire was content to witness the victory of his long struggle. He lays out the facts in this treatise that exposes cruelties committed in the name of religion in all times and countries.
