Summary
At the center of the novel is the dark web of intrigue surrounding Surgeon Stoke (on the brink of bankruptcy) and Charles Nutter, a local agent of Lord Castlemallard whom Stoke hates but envy. Sturk is haunted by vague memories of Dangerfield and gradually realizes that it is actually the cunning and dangerous Charles Archer who committed Beauclerc's murder. (The only other person who knows the identity of Charles Archer is his original accomplice, the church clerk Mr. Irons.) Foolishly, Stuck tries to blackmail Dangerfield and is later found with a club through his head in Phoenix Park.
