Summary
Brett Carstairs is a member of the Thalassia and Aspasia planetary expeditions. The expedition searches for evidence of an ancient civilization, and Carstairs makes a surprising discovery. It's a photo of a girl who appears to be human in a thousand-year-old ruin on a planet hundreds of light years from Earth.
Carstairs doesn't believe it at first, but eventually comes to the conclusion that the photo is real. He is then faced with the question of how a photograph of a human could have ended up on a planet so far away from Earth.
Carstairs and the other members of the expedition begin their investigation and soon discover that the planets Thalassia and Aspasia were once inhabited by two intelligent races. The two races went to war and eventually exterminated each other.
The paintings Carstairs discovered are the only remaining evidence of humanity in Thalassia and Aspasia. This reminds us of the time when humans were a thriving civilization, and raises the question of whether humans could have evolved on another planet.
