Summary
He is sent to profile Neil Paraday, a reclusive and talented journalist and author, in the newspaper. The reporter greatly admires Faraday's work, and when the two meet, they form an immediate bond. Faraday confides in the narrator about the new novel he is writing. He believes that this novel is his masterpiece.
But as news of Faraday's talent spreads, he becomes an unwanted celebrity. The public and media are becoming increasingly invasive, more interested in a writer's personal life than in evaluating his literary genius. Under these pressures, Faraday's health begins to deteriorate, and the narrator becomes his guardian of sorts, trying to protect him from the onslaught of public attention.
