Summary
A young and ambitious writer, Paul Obert, meets and becomes friends with the famous and successful novelist Henry St. George. Overt initially studied at St. Petersburg. Although fascinated by George's brilliance and artistry, he soon begins to see the darker side of the master's devotion to his craft.
George advises Overt to choose between art and life. He warns Overt that if he wants to achieve greatness as a writer, he must be willing to sacrifice everything else in his life. Saint George himself made this sacrifice, and as a result he became a lonely and isolated figure.
