Summary
The setting of the novel is the wilderness of Pennsylvania in the late 18th century. The protagonist, Edgar Huntley, is a young man obsessed with sleepwalking. He believes that his father was a sleepwalker who was murdered by an unidentified assailant, and is determined to find his culprit.
Huntley travels into the wilderness to investigate his father's death. Along the way, he encounters a variety of strange and dangerous characters, including a sleepwalking Indian chief, a mysterious leopard, and a group of fanatical religious settlers...
