벤 보바(Ben Bova)가 1962년에 출판한 SF 소설이다. 벤저민 윌리엄 보바는 미국의 작가이다. 120권이 넘는 과학책과 과학 소설을 썼다. 〈아날로그 사이언스 팩트 & 픽션〉 편집자로서 휴고상을 여섯 차례 받았다. 미국 SF 작가 협회 회장을 맡았다. 코로나19 범유행중인 2020년 코로나19에 의한 폐렴과 뇌졸중으로 사망하였다.
소설은 남극에 주둔 중인 두 군인이 먼 별에서 보내는 신비한 신호를 포착하는 SF 이야기다. 천문학자이기도 한 군인들은 메시지를 해독하고 그것이 어디서 왔는지 알아내려고 노력한다.

He died of pneumonia and stroke caused by COVID-19 in 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The novel is a science fiction story about two soldiers stationed in Antarctica who capture a mysterious signal from a distant star. The soldiers, who are also astronomers, try to decipher the message and find out where it came from.
