Georges Duroy, a poor former soldier, settles in Paris but struggles due to his lack of money. One day, he reunites with an old friend, Forestier, who helps him secure a job at a newspaper. With the guidance of Forestier’s wife, Madeleine, Duroy gains recognition for his writing, though his true strength lies in charm and manipulation rather than literary talent. He begins an affair with Madame de Marelle, using his relationships to climb the ranks in journalism. Meanwhile, Forestier's health deteriorates, and he eventually dies.
