Struggling with guilt and anxiety, Raskolnikov isolates himself, yet he finds it impossible to suppress his emotions. At the police station, he overhears a discussion about the murder, fueling his paranoia and leading him to believe he is already suspected. His friend, Razumikhin, worries about his condition and offers support, but Raskolnikov remains unstable. He later encounters Marmeladov, a drunken former official, and learns about his family’s dire circumstances, especially his daughter, Sonya, who has been forced into prostitution to support them. When Marmeladov dies in an accident, Raskolnikov donates money to his family, hoping to ease his conscience. Meanwhile, Porfiry Petrovich, the police investigator, subtly pressures Raskolnikov, intensifying his inner turmoil.
