Prince Myshkin, a kind and naive man with epilepsy, returns to Russia after years in Switzerland. He meets General Yepanchin and his family, including the beautiful and enigmatic Nastasya Filippovna. Myshkin, despite his innocence, is drawn into the complex social intrigues of St. Petersburg. Nastasya, tormented by her past, is pursued by the manipulative Rogozhin and the ambitious Ganya. Myshkin, out of compassion, offers to marry Nastasya, but she flees with Rogozhin. Meanwhile, Myshkin’s genuine and unconventional behavior confounds the aristocracy. He forms a bond with Aglaya, General Yepanchin’s daughter, who is both intrigued and frustrated by him. The novel establishes themes of innocence clashing with corruption and the destructive power of passion.
