Tess of the d'Urbervilles: A Pure Woman Part 1

Tess’s father, John Durbeyfield, discovers that he is a descendant of the once-noble d’Urberville family and becomes obsessed with restoring their lost status. At a village festival, Tess briefly encounters a young gentleman, Angel Clare. To support her family, she visits the d’Urberville estate, where she meets Alec d’Urberville. Alec takes an interest in her, but his advances make her uncomfortable. Despite her unease, Tess is forced to work at his estate, where she constantly struggles against his unwanted attention. One night in the woods, Alec takes advantage of her, shattering her innocence. Devastated, Tess returns home and gives birth to a child, who soon dies. Unable to remain in her village, she decides to leave and start anew elsewhere.
