Gabriel Oak, a hardworking shepherd, proposes to the independent and beautiful Bathsheba Everdene but is rejected. Bathsheba inherits her uncle’s farm and begins a new life, sending a Valentine’s card to the wealthy farmer Boldwood as a playful joke. However, the unexpected intensity of Boldwood’s response unsettles her, leaving her uncertain about her feelings. Meanwhile, Gabriel loses his flock and wanders until he arrives at Bathsheba’s farm, where he proves his worth by assisting her and earning her trust. As Gabriel becomes an indispensable worker on the farm, he offers advice, but Bathsheba insists on maintaining her independence. Boldwood proposes marriage, but Bathsheba hesitates, unable to decide. As the tension between the characters builds, Bathsheba begins to question what she truly desires.
