Jude and Sue return to Christminster, but they find no solace there. In a state of deep despair, Sue decides to go back to Phillotson, believing that she must atone for her sins. Jude is devastated by her departure, but Sue is convinced that she must follow what she sees as divine will. Left alone, Jude slowly loses his will to live. His dreams of academic achievement remain unfulfilled, and his physical health deteriorates. As he grows weaker, he resigns himself to a lonely and tragic fate. In the end, Jude dies in Christminster, his life a testament to the painful clash between idealism and societal constraints.
