Eustacia and Clym meet under the moonlight, and she becomes fascinated by him, believing he can take her away from Egdon Heath. Clym, however, has abandoned his former ambitions and wishes to stay and educate the locals, which disappoints Eustacia. Despite their differing aspirations, they are drawn to each other and eventually marry, much to Mrs. Yeobright’s disapproval. Meanwhile, Thomasin and Wildeve also marry, though their union is not entirely happy. As tensions grow, misunderstandings and conflicts between Clym and his mother deepen. When Mrs. Yeobright attempts to reconcile, she is turned away at Clym’s home, unaware that Eustacia is inside. Devastated and exhausted, she collapses on the heath, leading to tragic consequences.
