Henry Knight, a respected writer and intellectual, becomes increasingly interested in Elfride, seeing her as a pure and unspoiled woman. Unlike Stephen, Knight is of a higher social standing, which pleases her father. However, Knight is cautious and reserved in his affections, analyzing Elfride’s character rather than acting on impulse. Elfride, still emotionally conflicted, begins to grow attached to Knight but feels torn between her past and present. Eventually, Knight learns about her past relationship with Stephen, and his idealized perception of her is shattered. Feeling betrayed and disillusioned, he withdraws from their courtship, leaving Elfride devastated. Meanwhile, Stephen returns to England, now successful and hoping to reunite with Elfride. However, fate and misunderstandings continue to push them further apart.
