The story begins with George Somerset, a young architect, who arrives at Stancy Castle, where he meets Paula Power, the castle's owner. Paula is a modern, independent woman who inherited the estate from her father. Somerset is drawn to her intelligence and beauty, and she shows interest in him as well. Meanwhile, Captain De Stancy, a descendant of the castle’s former noble family, is introduced as a rival for Paula’s affections.
