Rachel Vinrace embarks on a sea voyage aboard the Euphrosyne, leaving England for South America. Raised in a sheltered environment, she is introduced to new ideas through her aunt Helen Ambrose and fellow travelers. The voyage exposes her to intellectual discussions, romance, and social conventions she has never questioned before. Upon arriving in the fictional town of Santa Marina, she begins to explore her identity and place in the world. She meets various expatriates, whose conversations challenge her naive worldview. As she becomes more aware of societal expectations, she struggles to reconcile her desires with the roles imposed upon her.
