In Part 1 of Charlotte Bront?'s The Professor, William Crimsworth, after rejecting his uncles' proposal to join the clergy, seeks employment with his estranged brother Edward, a mill owner. Edward's jealousy and mistreatment compel William to accept assistance from Mr. Hunsden, leading him to a teaching position at a boys' school in Brussels under Monsieur Pelet. There, William is also offered a role at the neighboring girls' school managed by Mademoiselle Reuter, who initially captivates him until he discovers her deceptive engagement to Pelet.
