Les Misérables, v. 1/5: Fantine Part 2

After failing to help the boy Little Gervais, Valjean vows to change and reinvents himself as Monsieur Madeleine. Meanwhile, the narrative shifts to 1817, portraying the carefree lives of young lovers, including Fantine and Tholomyes. Fantine’s dreams shatter as she is abandoned with a child, Cosette. To provide for her, she descends into poverty and disgrace. Despite her sacrifices, society offers no mercy. This section paints a poignant picture of women’s suffering and society’s hypocrisy. The seeds of tragedy begin to grow amidst themes of lost love, betrayal, and societal failure.
