Born as the son of Gilbert, the protagonist's story begins as he meets the simple peasant Pitou. Pitou awakens to revolutionary ideals and grows angry at the injustice and heavy taxation of the countryside. A sudden police raid accelerates events. Fleeing, Pitou discovers his own bravery and throws himself into the uprising. As he journeys toward Paris, the tension of revolution mounts. A fierce battle erupts at the Bastille prison. Ultimately, the Bastille falls, igniting the fires of revolution.
