Young Dick Sands, an apprentice aboard the whaling ship Pilgrim, suddenly finds himself thrust into leadership after the captain’s untimely death. Along the way, the crew rescues survivors from a wrecked vessel, but some newcomers carry dark intentions. A whale attack further cripples the ship, forcing Dick to take command as acting captain. Believing they are heading for South America, they instead become stranded on the dangerous coast of Africa. As the crew ventures inland, tensions rise, and the true peril of their location begins to unfold.
