The story begins on the Kerguelen Islands, where the narrator meets the mysterious Captain Len Guy. Driven by the loss of his brother, Len Guy sets out on an Antarctic voyage aboard the schooner Halbrane. They stop at Prince Edward and the Falklands to prepare for the perilous journey. Along the way, they rescue a castaway, Dirk Peters, who claims knowledge of the fate of Arthur Gordon Pym—a supposed fictional character from Poe’s novel. As the ship ventures deeper south, the line between fiction and reality begins to blur.
