The story opens with a symbolic “shuttle” connecting America and England through transatlantic marriage. Young American woman Rosalie Anstruthers marries British aristocrat Sir Nigel, only to find him cruel and abusive. Her sister Betty, determined to rescue Rosalie, travels to England and begins uncovering the secrets of Stornham Court. Strong-willed and confident, Betty immediately makes an impression and slowly recognizes her sister’s silent suffering.
