The novel begins in the mountainous city of Sulaco, within the fictional South American country of Costaguana. British expatriate Charles Gould inherits a silver mine and seeks to restore it, igniting political and social turmoil. The mine becomes both a symbol of national wealth and a source of corruption and violence. As European imperial interests collide with local ambitions, the region descends into chaos. Amid this tension, a dockworker named Nostromo begins to emerge as a key figure.
