Classics Read in English _ The Crowded Colony by Jerome Bixby
Jerome Bixby's "The Crowded Colony" is a science fiction story published in the early 1950s. The narrative unfolds on Mars, focusing on the interactions between a group of human colonizers known as the Conquerors and the indigenous Martians who inhabit the village of Kinkaaka. As the Conquerors wrestle with their perceptions of the Martians and the consequences of their mission, the story explores themes of imperialism, cultural misunderstanding, and the ethics of colonization.
The plot centers around Jack Burke, Barnes, and Randolph, three Conquerors who display a mixture of arrogance and naivety toward the native Martians. While Burke and Barnes maintain dismissive attitudes toward the Martians, Randolph discovers beauty in their culture and questions the moral implications of colonization. Tensions escalate when they realize that a group of Centaurians?a different alien species?has arrived, mistaking the human colonizers for remnants of Martian civilization. This misunderstanding creates the foundation for a confrontation that shatters their expectations and challenges their predatory perspective on the Martians, revealing deeper themes of identity and perception between species.

When the Martians had built the village of Kinkaaka there had been water in the canal, a cool, level sweep of green water from the northern icecap. Now there was none, and Kinkaaka clung to the upper swell of the bank and curved its staggered residential terraces like tragic brows over the long slope of sand and clay, the dead wall baked criss-cross by the sun, that bore at its deep juncture with the opposite bank the pitiful, straggling trench cut by Mars' last moving waters an untold time ago.
Kinkaaka's other side, away from the canal, was coated rust-red by the desert winds that came with sunset. Here were the crumbling market arenas of the ancient traders, the great mounds of underground warehouses long empty; and here now, with Mars' conquest, was the "native" section into whose sandstone huts the village's few inhabitants were shoved firmly, but not brutally, to rest when they weren't needed to work.
