Classics Read in English _ The Blue Behemoth by Leigh Brackett
Leigh Brackett's "The Blue Behemoth" is a science fiction novella from the early 1940s. The narrative is set in a future where an imperial circus travels through space, encountering bizarre creatures and perilous situations. The plot centers on the circus's mishaps and troubles as they navigate a mysterious journey on Venus, exploring themes of survival, fear, and the profound connections between humans and the unknown.
In "The Blue Behemoth," protagonists Bucky Shannon and his assistant Jig Bentley struggle to keep their failing circus operational. When they encounter Simon Beamish, a well-dressed stranger who offers to charter their circus for a profitable tour, they suspect hidden motives. As they venture to Venus, events spiral beyond control, resulting in the escape of dangerous beasts known as "cansins." The story's tension escalates when a malevolent force is revealed that seeks to control the "cansins" through a mysterious green entity, culminating in a frenzied battle between humans and unleashed primordial terrors. The novella combines elements of suspense, adventure, and the uncanny, examining the powerful bond between Gertrude, the last male "cansin," and his kind as they confront their past and seek connection in an unforgiving universe.

I looked at him. I said sourly, "You're kidding!"
"Kidding." Shannon put his elbows on the table and peered at me through a curtain of very blond hair that was trying hard to be red. "He says I'm kidding! With Shannon's Imperial Circus, the Greatest Show in Space, plastered so thick with attachments...."
"It's no more plastered than you are." I was sore because he'd been a lot quicker grabbing the pitcher. "The Greatest Show in Space.
