The opening introduces the young minister Gavin, a devout yet inexperienced man, whose life is unsettled by the arrival of Babbie, the mysterious “Egyptian woman.” Social conventions and tensions grow as soldiers, townsfolk, and even groups of strong-willed women play their part in humorous and satirical encounters. At first, Gavin resists Babbie’s audacity and allure, but his heart gradually begins to falter. Early sermons against women reveal his inner struggle and ironic contradictions. This part marks the beginning of his journey, torn between faith and love.
