Classics Read in English _ Shock Treatment by Stanley Mullen
Stanley Mullen's "Shock Treatment" emerges as an early 1950s science fiction novella that delves into the psychological darkness lurking beneath the surface of futuristic civilization. Set in the gritty environment of Venusport, the narrative examines how violence, mental instability, and cosmic horror permeate daily existence in an advanced but morally bankrupt society.
The central figure, Spud Newlin, works as a bartender while harboring a troubled criminal history. His mundane existence takes a dramatic turn when he encounters Songeen, an enigmatic woman desperate to rescue her husband Genarion, a brilliant scientist whose grip on reality has become increasingly tenuous. Reluctantly drawn into this personal crisis, Newlin agrees to undertake a perilous mission that will force him to confront forces beyond his comprehension.
Upon entering Genarion's domain, Newlin discovers a reality warped by experimental technology and psychological manipulation, where the boundaries between rational thought and complete mental breakdown have dissolved. This alien environment challenges everything he believes about consciousness and human limitation, leading to revelations that threaten to shatter his own sanity.
The climactic confrontation exposes not only Genarion's tragic transformation but also unveils disturbing truths about Newlin's mental state and humanity's precarious future. As the protagonists become entangled in a conflict of cosmic proportions, Mullen explores fundamental questions about the nature of consciousness, the ethics of absolute power, and whether love can survive in a reality where madness and reason have become indistinguishable.

In Venusport, on payday-night, it is difficult to tell for certain where the town leaves off and the pink elephants begin. It is difficult to tell about other things, too. Spud Newlin had heard that a man could sometimes get rich overnight just tending bar on such occasions, and he was putting the rumor to the test. Not many bartenders had lasted long enough to find out.
The night had had a good start. Clock hands over the bar in the Spacebell registered 1:18 Venus-time, and considering, things were almost dull at the moment. The place had been jumping earlier, but hilarity had worn itself out, the dead had been removed and excitement dulled. No relatives or widows of the dead sportsmen had yet appeared; all corpses-elect had died clean, with the minimum of messy violence and, surprisingly, only three more or less innocent bystanders had been burned down in the proceedings. After shattering uproar, such calm was disturbing. Newlin was actually getting bored.
