Edward Henry Machin is discontented with his ordinary life and seeks a path toward something greater. A dog‐bite incident jolts him into reconsidering his circumstances, while an unexpected stroke of luck with a bank‐note becomes a turning point in his fortunes. Conversations with Mr. Sachs challenge his artistic convictions and ambitions, while events involving Lord and Lady Woldo bring him into conflict with aristocratic society.
