A young man from the North, Richard Larch, moves to London determined to make a fresh start and takes up a clerk’s position. By day he performs routine office work, and by night he nurtures aspirations of becoming a writer while exploring the opportunities of the metropolis. His encounters with social circles and young women draw him into the bustling life of the city, raising questions of identity and ambition. The contrast between his static home town and the dynamic London world intensifies his desire for independence and success. Yet he gradually realises that his path will not be smooth and comes face to face with the harsh realities.
