Tolstoy’s Master and Man portrays the journey of the greedy landowner Vasili and the humble, hardworking peasant Nikita as they travel through a brutal winter landscape that exposes their contrasting characters and inner conflicts, and as they become lost in a snowstorm the social distance between them grows clearer while Nikita’s quiet goodness stands against Vasili’s self-interest, leading both men beyond mere survival into a confrontation with their deeper selves, ultimately bringing Vasili to a moment of revelation in which he discovers the meaning of compassion and self-sacrifice only at the edge of death.
