Part 1 opens with the preface and the early chapters of A Russian Proprietor, tracing the young landowner Nekhliudof’s gradual awakening as he confronts the disparity between his idealistic beliefs and the harsh reality of peasant life while recognizing his own complicity in a system built on inequality. These chapters depict the clash between theory and lived experience as he witnesses the poverty, ignorance, and burdens endured by the peasants and realizes how distant his previous assumptions were from their actual lives. Torn between the desire to help and a growing awareness of his limitations, he struggles to understand his moral responsibilities and the contradictions inherent in being both a benefactor and a privileged owner. Part 1 plants the seeds of transformation and establishes the ethical questions that will deepen throughout the rest of the collection.
