Attempts to reconcile with the existing order clash repeatedly with impulses to reject it, heightening emotional intensity. Hypocrisy and self-deception revealed in human relationships sharpen the protagonist’s perspective and destabilize long-held standards. Gradually, it becomes clear that a return to the former self is no longer possible.
