Three Days in the Village, and Other Sketches

This work portrays the everyday lives of Russian peasants to reveal how poverty and social inequality shape human existence. Tolstoy highlights the growing presence of tramps and beggars in rural villages, exposing the structural hardship embedded in peasant life. Despite their own scarcity, villagers offer shelter and food, prompting reflection on human solidarity and moral responsibility. Through ordinary encounters and subtle observation, the gap between wealth and poverty is shown as an accepted yet deeply troubling social condition.
