Fraulein Schmidt and Mr Anstruther Part 2

In the second half, the long-standing emotional imbalance becomes increasingly visible as the limits of the relationship are fully revealed. Schmidt’s continued devotion begins to carry an undercurrent of resignation and quiet self-awareness. Anstruther remains largely unchanged, and his indifference sharpens the sense of emotional solitude. The novel concludes by calmly illustrating the emptiness that remains when devotion is never truly reciprocated.
