The novel begins as Vera, young and inexperienced, marries the enigmatic Everard Wemyss and enters a new and unfamiliar life. Soon after the marriage, she finds herself isolated within her husband’s house, surrounded by the lingering presence of his first wife and an atmosphere of quiet unease. Everard appears outwardly considerate and protective, yet his words and behavior subtly undermine Vera’s confidence. This first part slowly builds a sense of psychological control and uneasiness beneath the surface of marital affection.
