The most important thing in my life of faith
was to know God's heart more deeply.
Through prayer, conversing with God,
I struggled desperately to understand His heart.
As a result of that struggle,
I gathered together, one by one,
the prayers written over nine years.
Each time I wrote a prayer,
I wrestled with its content.
God's heart be present...
this prayer bring joy to God...
May it be a prayer of listening, not merely speaking...
The more I wrestled with the content,
the more the prayer's substance transformed.
As I did so,
whenever a word that seemed to carry God's voice
caught my attention,
I revised the prayer again and again.
Through this process of repeated revision,
it became a precious time of grace,
gradually sensing God's heart.
Prayer was
a small skiff navigating
the vast expanse of God's heart.
