Spared at the last moment, he is ordered by General von Reiter to locate and protect his daughter Karen, tying his own survival to a morally dangerous mission. As Guild encounters shadowy figures, secret documents, sea voyages, and military settings, he realizes that the war is fought through intelligence and fear as much as through weapons.
