Magdalen resolves not to submit and begins transforming herself into a performer within society. Acting and disguise become tools of survival and strategy. Society offers no protection, so she chooses manipulation instead. Her goal increasingly justifies morally unstable methods. The pursuit of justice begins to tilt toward dangerous obsession.
