“A Rogue’s Life,” published in 1879, is a satirical autobiographical novel in which the protagonist Frank Softly recounts the turbulent course of his own life with wit and irony. Born into a once-respectable but financially declining family he reveals from childhood a talent for caricature and a sharp eye for social hypocrisy and pretension. Though he studies medicine and appears destined for a respectable career his impulsiveness vanity and moral weakness lead him into deception flight and a series of reckless adventures that justify his self-description as a rogue. Through humor and candid confession Collins critiques Victorian ideals of class and success while tracing the protagonist’s fall self-awareness and belated reflection.
