The narrative opens under the ominous theme that the sins of the father are visited upon the children, as Leonard Outram, a penniless English gentleman, resolves to journey into Africa to restore his fallen family fortune. Accompanied by his loyal and courageous Zulu companion Otter, he sets out driven by ambition, revenge, and hope. In search of a legendary lost race rumored to possess great jewels, they traverse wilderness and danger until they encounter a hidden people ruled by fear, ritual, and a monstrous crocodile god. Within this strange world, figures such as the priestess Soa and the queen Juanna intensify the web of intrigue, as love, vengeance, and destiny intertwine.
